Public Relations during COVID-19

One of the many services we offer at Communiqué Design & Marketing is public relations. Although there are many definitions of the term, our favorite description of public relations is the cultivation and management of an organization’s publics through strategic communications. We advise many clients in multiple industries helping them develop long-lasting relationships with their audiences through strategic communication efforts. We do this through social media, events, and our strong relationship with the media.

Public relations is an important year-round process and ensures an organization remains top of mind with its key audiences; however, at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, we knew public relations would be more important than ever before. Through the strategic placements of PSAs, press releases, radio ads, and interviews, we were able to secure thousands of dollars of earned media for our clients.

Take a look at these two examples of how Communiqué worked with Tompkins Trust Company and the Ithaca Tompkins International Airport to employ public relations strategies, ensuring both clients remained relevant and top of mind throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

As uncertainty swept the nation during the coronavirus pandemic, Tompkins Trust Company, a beloved community bank and one of the first to offer relief programs in New York State sought to assure its communities and customers that “we would get through the crisis together”.

Communiqué worked directly with Tompkins Trust Company President Greg Hartz and the marketing team and was able to secure more than 150 earned media placements based on our strong network of media connections and content suggestions.

Furthermore, while working remotely with Tompkins Trust Company’s leadership team, we were able to create a PSA featuring the Trust Company’s president sharing a message of support that was broadcast throughout the region and inspired hope within the community.

By ensuring Tompkins Trust Company remained top of mind throughout the coronavirus panic, we were able to favorably position the organization as a trusted partner to both customers and the community at large throughout the pandemic. Utilizing strategic public relations during this time will also help Tompkins Trust Company in the future as people will remember how they were treated and the actions taken by organizations. During a crisis, it is crucial to communicate as effectively and efficiently as possible to ease the minds of customers, employees, and the community.

From the beginning, Communiqué recognized the importance of positioning the newly renovated airport as a vital community asset. Working closely with the leadership team at Ithaca Tompkins International Airport (ITH) in conjunction with Tompkins County, we were able to ensure the airport remained relevant throughout the pandemic. Due to the continuation of air travel for essential reasons, it was crucial that the airport remain open and communicate its status to the external public.

We were committed to showcasing ITH’s efforts of keeping the terminal as clean as possible and providing customers with the most up to date health and safety information. Through the strategic use of social media and radio ads, we were able to reach our large audience and provide critical information.
