Sitting Down with Mike Hall, Director of Ithaca Tompkins International Airport

Ithaca Tompkins International Airport (ITH) is Tompkins County’s community airport. Historically, ITH serves hundreds of thousands of passengers traveling to and from the region as a one-stop connection to over 750 global destinations through four connecting hubs. Daily non-stop flights to and from these major hubs allow for both domestic and international travel. Just ten minutes from downtown Ithaca, ITH is a major gateway for students and families of Cornell University, Ithaca College, and TC3.

Communiqué Design & Marketing has been working with ITH for more than ten years in many different facets of marketing and communications from a complete brand overhaul to managing its website and social media presence. However, after speaking with Mike Hall, Director of ITH, it is evident that this relationship goes beyond just advertising and design work.

Additionally, since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Communiqué Design & Marketing has never been more important as it works with the airport to recover air service in the wake of the pandemic.

Take a look at a Q&A with Mike and Maddie:

Q: How long have you been working with Communiqué Design & Marketing?

A:  We’ve known each other for a long time, but we’ve been formally working together for over five years since I’ve been the airport director. This is a great community and the President of Communiqué (Laurie Linn) has been integral to the community in so many ways like chairing the Chamber of Commerce and doing a lot of connecting within the community. That’s very important when you’re in the communications business because you have to know who to reach out to and who to communicate with in order to get the job done most effectively.

Q: In what aspects has Communique helped your brand?

A: Well, I think Communique has really helped our brand by leading us and facilitating us through a discussion that allowed us to zero in on exactly how we wanted to be perceived to our market, to our community, and to our broader Air Service market here at the Ithaca Tompkins International Airport. I think the leadership that was provided was extremely important and the advice that comes from knowing the community was very helpful. Also we live in a very diverse community, Queens and Tompkins are the two most diverse counties in New York State, so there are a lot of different perspectives out there and if you think yours is the only one, you’re missing the boat. So Communiqué was extremely helpful in allowing us to gauge, not just how we were seeing things, but how other members of the community were seeing things and to use that information to draw together to make a powerful brand for the airport.

Q: How would you describe Communiqué in three words?

A: Accessible, knowledgeable, and very creative.

Q: In what ways has Communiqué exceeded your expectations?

A:  I’ve worked a number of times with other organizations that profess to do what Communiqué does. I think what’s different about Communiqué is the deep involvement of Communiqué in our community and the ability to spread the message, not just over the media waves, but also personally to facilitate and broker conversations with important people in the community. I think that’s the added value that other companies have not brought to the table and that’s a direct reflection of Laurie, yourself (Maddie), Adrianne, and others being very much out there and part of the community.
